2025 Year in Review: The Year We Built the Edge
About
As we close out 2025, we’re looking back with a sense of awe and appreciation at all we’ve accomplished together this year. Firstly, we can’t help but notice all the positive energy flowing from our community spaces these past few months. Thank you all for your support, your willingness to experiment and for being shoulder to shoulder with us on this journey. This was a year of productive development, and it was a year marking fundamental transformation. We shifted gears, innovated on our approach, and delivered more power and agency to your hands.
From the launch of Edge Node to the real-world applications offered by Moss coupled with Edge Node, 2025 was the year the Holo ecosystem moved from "theoretical" to "real-world."
Here is a look at the milestones that defined our year.
1. The Birth of the Edge Node This open-source, OCI-compliant container image allows you to turn HoloPorts and other hardware into always-on nodes for the peer-to-peer web. It was more than a software release; it was a giant leap forward toward independence for the entire ecosystem.
2. Moss Groups: Resilience in Action The integration of Edge Nodes with Moss allows families, friend groups, and businesses to spin up their own private, sovereign communication networks. We saw users "escaping the digital gulag," prioritizing data sovereignty and business continuity in an era of frequent cloud outages.
3. The Economy Takes Shape with Unyt Infrastructure needs an economy to sustain it. This year, we successfully demonstrated hApp-level automated billing for always-on nodes within the Unyt application. This is a critical piece of the puzzle for everything to come.
4. Wind-Tunnel Testing Our community is helping push Holochain to its limits running Wind-Tunnel Edge Nodes. The Holochain team is gathering critical data on real-world performance and scalability. This collaborative stress-testing is invaluable for hardening Holochain to support heavier loads and more complex applications in the future. By the way, there’s no limit to how many nodes can participate and help us in this regard. HoloPort or custom machine, VPS? Help us push Holochain to its limits and go above and beyond! Here’s a guide to join in the testing.
5. HolOS Made Simple We heard your feedback on usability and delivered HolOS v.0.0.7, with a simplified 60-second installation process and broader hardware support. With HolOS we’ve lowered the barriers to entry, making it easier than ever for HoloPorts to join the network. HoloPort showing flashing pink LED? That’s a signal letting you know your machine is still running legacy HPOS software. You can upgrade it following the instructions in this guide here.
Big things are happening, and not only with us. The entire ecosystem has been growing and delivering at unprecedented levels and we look forward to adding to that with some exciting announcements in Q1.
Thank you for building, testing, hosting, and believing with us. We notice you noticing us! We’ll see you on the Edge in 2026.
